EAT @ Marugame’s
INSANE Fresh Noodles, Tragic Gyoza
Join DC on an edibility assessment adventure at Marugame Udon in Torrance, the Japanese chain that has grown into the world’s largest udon brand. Marugame makes its Sanuki-style udon fresh in an open kitchen. You can watch the noodles get rolled, cut, cooked, and rinsed before they land in your bowl. Then you grab a tray and slide down the cafeteria line.
DC orders the house favorite, Tonkotsu Udon, plus the recommended shrimp tempura, a vegan miso udon, and his own pick, the gyoza. The tonkotsu comes with rich, savory broth, al dente noodles, tender pork, and an egg soaked in the broth. The tempura is much better than you’d expect from fast food. The vegan bowl wins over a self-described carnivore. The gyoza does not. He washes it all down with a calamansi drink he wants a second round of. Can a chain built on consistency pass the test? Watch to find out.
Scores: Tonkotsu Udon 7.4 | Shrimp Tempura 7.3 | Vegan Miso Udon 7.1 | Gyoza 3.1 | Overall 7.3
